This is our flagship design and provides the base for one of the largest aquaponics farms in Africa. The largest single tunnel structure to get adequate air flow we recommend is 36m x 13m. By having the tanks in a separate structure you are able to really optimise your planting space. With 240m2 of DWC and 65m2 media beds you are able to grow a wide variety of produce. The five 13,000L tanks have 1,350kg theoretical fish stocking density per tunnel, which can yield up to 225kg of fish harvested monthly.

Description

The commercial series of tunnels is our standard level commercial tunnels. It has been designed to maximize your hydroponic and aquaculture yields compared to system area.  It utilizes proven commercial hydroponics systems (Gravel media, DWC, Wicking, and Vertical aeroponics), designed based on all aquaculture and hydroponic best practices. Do note that the commercial series is designed for yields, and not convenient ergonomics and work space. Planting efficiency ratio is rated at 77% and above, which provides you with 80% + of hydroponic planting space. The specification of the aquaculture system is designed with a commercial “hydroponic area-tank ratio” of 1:8.

Planting Efficiency Ratio: in commercial aquaponics, your planting efficiency ratio determines the percentage of your aquaponic system that is actually planted. The higher the percentage, the higher equivalent yields and revenue you can generate from your plants.

Yield Indication: The “Commercial System” provides you the capability to plant in the DWC (Deep Water Culture) and in Gravel. Each tunnel has 240m² DWC which is large enough to plant 6,000 heads of lettuce at 20cm spacing. In addition, the gravel beds are best suited to plant larger crops such as cucumbers. With 65m² of media bed per tunnel available, if you spaced cucumbers at 50cm apart you can fit in 180 cucumber plants producing up to 900 cucumbers per month, alternatively you could plant an additional 1,625 head of lettuce.

It further has 1,350kg theoretical fish stocking density per tunnel, which can yield up to 225kg of fish harvested monthly.

Do note that farming in general can be unpredictable and an aquaponics system can take 6 months to a year until it is operating at maximum production. Numbers are indicative.

Aquaculture system

Every hydroponic tunnel structure is fed by a single 9m x 12.8m aquaculture section. The aquaculture system consists of 5 x 13’000lt fish tanks.  Tanks are welded in HDPE with a steel mesh support. Tanks are 3m diameter and 1.4m deep and have both bottom and side drain, as well as tank cover.

The system is designed with solid lifts for waste removal from the tanks, and single venturi inlet system per tank, to de-risk the system from aeration failure.

Water runs from the tanks to the swirl filter, through the grow beds and into a sump from which it is then returned to the fish tanks.

Solid Removals and Biofilter

Mechanical filtration on each aquaculture tunnel is achieved using four Matala Vortex filters. These advance mechanical filtration provide 10-15 more compact mechanical filtration compared to your standard vortex filters, which equates to more grow space for you.

Hydroponic System

The “Commercial System” system is composed of a single 24m x 13m wading “Deep Water Culture” (DWC) and 45 Gravel media  hydroponic grow beds per hydrponic tunnel. The gravel grow beds breaks down the ammonia to nitrite and nitrate, acting a natural bio and mechanical filter, and is recommended due to its stabilization factor in overall system. Recommendation will be to use 19mm gravel as the grow media. Should you wish to also grow leafy veg such as lettuce then the grow beds can easily be converted into float beds at no extra cost.

It is recommended to use specially imported high density Isoboard (300DVA) as float rafts in the DWC. This significantly increases the lifetime of your rafts (15DVA polystyrene rafts is generally replaced every 3-5 months costing).
